In the interview that Silvio Rodríguez granted to the journalist Jorge Benítez for the magazine La Época, from Chile, published on June 16, 1995, the Cuban troubadour declared that he was not an investigator of José Martí's life and work, but a "a depositary".

It was the afternoon of May 8, 1925 when two young music lovers, known as Siro Rodríguez and Rafael Cueto, were meeting with their guitars at the house of their friend Miguel Matamoros, who was celebrating his 31st birthday that day. Many were the songs and boleros that came out of the throats of those three Santiagueros, troubadours by hobby with a perfect mixture of voices, all of them from the authorship of the honored person.
