I met Moraima Lopez Leon in 1980, when a national meeting on radio programming was held in Holguin –an eastern Cuban province. At that time, Moraima was a young office clerk. She kindly welcomed our delegation from Camaguey province and accompanied it to the meeting.

Later I noticed her early job promotions in Holguin radio stations, her will to study and her projection as leading figure in the development of this mass medium for  the last twenty five years.

Since I was a little girl, I used to play being a teacher rather than being a housewife.Dr. Maria Dolores Ortiz, I think that in addition of having a vast general knowledge, you are a great communicator with a personality very typical of you. I would also say that your way of speaking and your peculiar smile filled people with satisfaction and harmony. Does it have to do with you childhood? This is a good subject to begin with the conversation. Don’t you think?

I had a happy childhood, surrounded of a very nice and stable family. I was born in Holguin province, in eastern Cuba. It used to be a quiet city; it was like a large town, as President Raul Castro once said, where horses were still tied up around Calixto García Park, as during colonial times. It does not mean that there was no cultural life in the province, but less than expected it, taking into account Holguin’s economic development. I used to go to “Los Amigos” school, very close from my place. There I went through elementary and secondary grades.
